A Love Story Beautifully Captured in a Portrait
Today, May 15, as a highlight of its New York Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale, Christie’s announced in a press release that it is auctioning Picasso’s portrait of lover Dora Maar, Femme assise, robe bleue for a hefty sum. Bidding is estimated to start at $35 million.
The release reports that the portrait, painted on Picasso’s 58th birthday, Oct. 25, 1939, was filled with the “unique character, distortions and tension that mark Picasso’s greatest portraits of Dora; at the same time, there is a tender sensuality present in the organic, curvaceous forms of the face which provides some insight into their relationship.”
Well, artists and lovers of art, now’s your chance to own a masterpiece by one of the greats—that is if you have $35 million to $50 million to spare. In case you need me, I’ll be buying a dozen or so lottery tickets.
